The hardline truth

Why a consumer TV won't survive a retail floor or office lobby.

Three operational realities we see when operators try to put a big-box-store panel into a commercial environment.

01

Built for 16-hour days, not 4-hour days

Commercial-grade panels are rated for 16 hours of continuous operation, 7 days a week. The thermal envelope, backlight driver, and firmware are sized for retail floors, hotel lobbies, restaurant lines, and office showrooms. A consumer TV throttles or dims after the first half-shift — and most warranties void on day one of commercial use.

02

Locked screens, locked content

Hardware button matrix is disabled at install. No remote in the box. The screen never goes off-air because someone leaned against the bezel or wanted to watch the game. Content delivery runs through the CrownTV media player, scheduled from the CrownTV Dashboard — there's no easy way to take it off-script.

03

3-year commercial warranty + 48-hour replacement

Standard 3-year limited warranty on the panel during commercial use. CrownTV layers a 48-hour replacement-player promise during active service contract. If a screen needs to come down, we ship the swap, file the claim, and dispatch the crew. You don't talk to the manufacturer.

16,000+ screens running today across 1,800+ operators — the majority of them indoor commercial panels.

Side by side

Consumer TV vs. CrownTV indoor commercial.

Same square footage. Same content. Wildly different operating life, tampering surface, and total cost of ownership.

Consumer TV
CrownTV indoor commercial
Daily duty: Engineered for 4–6 hours of personal viewing per day. Internal cooling envelope, backlight driver, and panel firmware throttle, dim, or auto-power-off after that.
Engineered for 16 hours of operation per day, 7 days a week. Continuous-duty thermal envelope, hardened backlight, and commercial firmware tested under retail and office conditions.
Brightness: 200–300 nits. Washes out under bright LED retail lighting, overhead fluorescents, or daylight-adjacent interiors.
500 nits — readable under LED store lighting, hotel lobby skylights, and office overheads without washing out.
Anyone can turn it off: Power button on the bezel. Remote in the box. Anyone walking by can change input, mute, lower brightness, switch source, or power it off entirely. We've seen it happen on day one.
Hardware button matrix locked at install. No remote shipped. Centralized control through the CrownTV Dashboard — staff can't accidentally take a screen off-air, and visitors can't tamper.
Smart-TV interruptions: Smart-TV firmware injects pop-up app prompts, OS-update reboots, and on-screen advertising over your content. Some require a button-press to dismiss before content resumes.
No smart-TV layer. CrownTV media player drives the screen, CrownTV Dashboard schedules the content. Nothing pops up over what you're showing.
Bezel for video walls: 30+ mm of bezel between panels. Combine two and you get a wide plastic seam down the middle of any video wall build.
Sub-2mm bezel-to-bezel at the seam on video-wall-spec panels. Near-invisible joint across 2×2 and 3×3 builds.
Color & calibration: Consumer panels drift after 6–12 months of continuous use. Brand colors shift; the orange you signed off on becomes a different orange.
Color-calibrated at the factory and rated to hold accuracy across the 3-year commercial warranty window. Brand fidelity stays consistent across the install.
Mounting & theft: Consumer wall brackets — often plastic, never lockable. The screen can be lifted off the bracket without tools. We've watched it happen at street-front installs.
Commercial steel brackets, lockable VESA, anti-theft hardware. Screws and security pins selected per install. Multi-location rollouts get the same kit at every site.
Warranty: 1-year limited warranty with explicit commercial-use exclusions. Mount it in a store and the warranty voids the day it goes on the wall.
3-year commercial warranty on the panel. CrownTV layers a 48-hour replacement-player promise during active service contract — we file the claim, not you.
Network & management: Every screen is its own island. Updates, content, schedules — all changed locally, panel by panel, with a remote.
Every screen on the CrownTV Dashboard. One browser. One login. Push content, schedules, and brand updates to one screen or every screen at once.
Sourcing & install: Drop-shipped from a big-box retailer. You handle delivery, mount selection, electrical, network, content, and warranty claim if it dies.
Site survey, ship, mount, cable, commission, train — handled by one CrownTV crew under one contract. One number to call when something needs attention.
What's in the panel

12 things a commercial indoor display does that a TV can't.

Every one of these is a real failure mode we've seen on a consumer TV pressed into commercial duty. The panels we ship don't have them.

01

4K UHD across the size range

3840×2160 native 4K resolution across 32″, 43″, 50″, 55″, 65″, 75″, 85″, and 98″ panels. Same resolution standard whether you're shipping one screen or fifty.

02

16/7 commercial duty cycle

Engineered to run 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. Firmware, backlight driver, and thermal envelope are tested for continuous retail and office operation.

03

500-nit panel brightness

Two to three times brighter than a consumer TV. Stays readable under LED store lighting, hotel lobby skylights, and office overheads without washing out.

04

Sub-2mm seam for video walls

Bezel-tight panel sets ship with a sub-2mm bezel at the joint. Drop two side-by-side and you get a near-invisible seam — the build that powers Victoria's Secret Fifth Avenue and L'Occitane Fifth Avenue.

05

Locked button matrix

Hardware controls disabled at install. No remote in the box. No staff or customer can mute, change input, swap source, or power down a screen on their own.

06

Portrait or landscape mounting

Every panel is rated for both orientations. Vertical for narrow retail walls, check-out backsplashes, and concierge towers; horizontal for showrooms, lobbies, and conference rooms.

07

Optional capacitive touch

Multi-touch indoor panels for interactive kiosks, wayfinding, conference rooms, and retail product configurators. Same commercial chassis, same Dashboard.

08

Anti-glare coating standard

Non-reflective panel coating handles direct overhead lighting in retail and office environments. Heavy-glare or skylight-adjacent installs are scoped during site survey.

09

Color accuracy for brand work

Color-calibrated at the factory. Brand fidelity holds across the 3-year warranty window — the orange or indigo you signed off on stays the same color a year in.

10

Wired or wireless network

Each panel pairs with a CrownTV media player on dual-band WiFi or Gigabit Ethernet. Multi-screen installs typically run wired for predictability.

11

Anti-theft, lockable mounts

Commercial steel brackets, lockable VESA, anti-theft hardware. The screen can't be lifted off the wall without tools — and the tools we use are not the ones in the box.

12

Nationwide installation in 5 days

CrownTV's licensed install network covers all 50 states. Standard turnkey deployment — site survey, ship, mount, cable, commission, train — runs under one week per site.

Indoor digital signage — FAQ

What's the difference between a commercial display and a regular TV?
A commercial-grade indoor display is engineered for continuous operation — 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, under real retail and office lighting conditions. The thermal envelope, backlight driver, panel firmware, and warranty are all sized for that duty. A consumer TV is built for a few hours of personal viewing, ships with a smart-TV operating system that injects ads and update prompts over your content, and explicitly excludes commercial use from its warranty. Mount one in a store and the day-one warranty is void.
Why does the button-tampering issue matter?
Every consumer TV ships with an exposed power button on the bezel and a remote control in the box. Anyone — staff, a customer, a visitor — can press a button and change the input, lower the brightness, mute the audio, or power the screen off. We've seen all four happen on day one of an install. Commercial indoor panels disable the hardware button matrix at install and don't ship with a remote. Content delivery runs through the CrownTV media player and Dashboard, so the only way to change what's on the screen is through the CrownTV login.
What sizes do indoor commercial displays come in?
Standard indoor commercial sizes run 32″, 43″, 50″, 55″, 65″, 75″, 85″, and 98″. For tight spaces — concierge towers, check-out backsplashes, narrow column wraps — 32″ and 43″ are the right call. For most retail and office installs, 55″ and 65″ are the sweet spot. Lobbies and showrooms typically run 75″. Flagship video walls combine 85″ and 98″ panels with a video-wall-spec bezel for sub-2mm seams.
How bright should an indoor display be?
300 to 500 nits is the right range for typical indoor retail, lobby, and office environments. Below 300 you'll fight LED store lighting and overhead fluorescents. Above 500 you start spending on brightness you don't need indoors. Our standard indoor panel sits at 500 nits — the peak of useful indoor brightness without crossing into window-display territory. For window-facing or sunlit interiors, the conversation moves to high-brightness window displays at 3,000+ nits.
Can I build a video wall with these?
Yes. Indoor commercial panels with the video-wall bezel spec ship with a sub-2mm seam at the joint, supporting clean 2×2 and 3×3 builds. For seam-critical flagship walls — Victoria's Secret Fifth Avenue is one of ours — the install team handles the rail, the bracket, the cable run, and the content sync from the Dashboard. Multi-panel walls deploy as one logical screen.
How do you actually push content to the screens?
Every screen runs a CrownTV media player, which connects to the CrownTV Dashboard over WiFi or Ethernet. Content, schedules, brand updates, daypart logic, and emergency overrides all push from the Dashboard. There's no smart-TV layer involved — no pop-ups, no app prompts, no OS-update reboots over your content.
What about installation?
Standard turnkey deployment runs under one week from site survey to live screen. Site survey, ship, mount, cable, commission, train — all handled by CrownTV's licensed install network in all 50 states. Multi-location rollouts get a single project manager from kickoff to handoff.
What's covered under the warranty?
Standard 3-year commercial limited warranty on the panel during active commercial use. CrownTV layers a 48-hour replacement-player promise during active service contract — if anything fails on the network side, we ship the swap, file the claim, and dispatch the crew. You don't talk to the manufacturer.
